The state of Wisconsin has been protesting the bill proposed by the Wisconsin Governor, Gov. Walker. This is important for a few reasons. The State of Wisconsin just gave a 128 Million dollar tax cut to the top two percent, and now they are going to be 138 Million Dollars in the Red. Without the Tax Cuts, according to the Governor, many of the top 2% would have left the state for a more tax friendly state. This is currently unknown as to whether what he said was true or not. It is a fact that the Governor is asking the Teachers and other Public Workers to take up the slack for these cuts. The Unions have all conceded that they will take the cuts and contribute more to the HealthCare costs and other things. The Governor has told them that wasn't enough. This is more about "union busting" for him, because he has other plans that the Union Members are not going to like, according to many Republican members of the Senate. He must first break the Unions to get these past, so that the rest of the plan can go through virtually unimpeded. To be fair, the Governor was elected to do some very hard things. That is without question.
There is where the current climate in the rest of the media stops, and few have went on to explain any of the rest of it. Let's put on our Critical Thinking caps, and think about what this means. This is more than what appears on the surface, and affects the history of the US more than anyone ever dreamed. Here is the thing, Wisconsin is where the unions were first the most successful. They brought us things like the 5 day work week, and also the "child labor" laws were negotiated because of them. It's been said that if you can break the Unions in Wisconsin, then you can break them throughout the rest of the world. This is the beginning of where our "critical thinking caps" should take us. Now we must delve deeper into what this means for the US as a whole. This is more than just Union Busting, it's also about the future of this country. Let's leave the naïveté behind and move forward with this thinking.
It has been said that this is the first step in the Governors overall perception of where he wants to move the State. His secondary bill, not yet in the Legislative Branch, is the most important part of why he says the "Public Union" must be busted. This, however, isn't really why the Republicans are wanting this "union Busting" to go through.
The republicans are getting most of the financing from major corporations, after the Supreme Courts highly controversial decision of Citizens United. Over the last few election cycles, the Democrats had the financial advantage, and to be completely honest, they needed it. After the Citizens United decision, Corporations are now allowed to finance elections. This has lead to a more robust Republican initiative on many fronts. One of these fronts is the wars on Unions, the middle class, and poor. Corporations have no morals other than to make a profit for their companies and shareholders. They don't care if the poor eat, or the middle class is cut out. This isn't what drives them. The money is the only driving factor in these corporations, generally speaking. Further, morals shouldn't play a factor in what they do. That isn't their responsibility, nor what they were created to do. Again, we must remember they are in this for the profit. This is where the Conservatives that have aligned themselves with these Corporations went wrong.
That is but the tip of the iceberg, though. The Governors plan is to allow for the School Districts to make other cuts, and to get the legislation passed that allow these cuts he claims that the Unions must be broken. This should have given pause in thought as to what is actually in that next proposed bill. This is not going to be speculative, but rather using his own words and making sense of what he said.
It is a well known fact that the Republican Party has tried to eliminate every form of Social Program that the Democrats have ever put forth. One of the biggest is the Department of Education. most Democrats have no idea as to why they would want to eliminate Public Education, and more importantly the Department of Education. There is but speculation as to why, and that would be unfair. So we must move towards the use Critical Thinking in this part. First we must point out that Conservatives within the Republican Party are not worried the Government Collective mandates to improve the US. They are only concerned about what it is that they think was a better past to be the present and the future. They never give a thought as to unfairness or any of those other things that Liberals give thought to.
What does this mean to Wisconsin? This means that Busses will no longer be forced to pick some students up from remote areas for the purpose of integrations. Yes, this is a walk back from Segregation and integration. Remember, Ronald Reagan made it plain that Education is not a right, but rather a privilege. This means that the US is no longer supposed to see Education as a building block for the future, but only for those that can afford it. This also means that the "School Vouchers", in which many of the underprivileged will lack the financing to go to a better school, although that isn't what is being said. This is a huge step backwards for the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's and the early 1970's.
It has been said that this is needed in the US. That everyone must make huge sacrifices in order to keep this country afloat, financially. Let me ask this question, however. If this is true, then why are they giving tax cuts for the wealthiest of the Citizens? It is simply not true to say that you must give tax breaks to one group of people while simultaneously raising it on another. A good example of this is what happened during the December debates when the rest of the country kept the Bush Era Tax cuts, and the poorest had theirs raised by, according to some experts, as much as 18% and more. This is in direct conflict with the historical outlook of what this country was built upon. In general, whenever we have had a mega crisis like the one we are currently in, the whole country has been asked to sacrifice. Not so this time. This is more about "Redistribution of Wealth" upwards then it is about the sacrifices of all Citizens. That isn't opinion, that is a factual analysis based upon recent laws from proposed legislation being proposed from the White House and other state facilities. The economic collapse cannot be put aside when looking at this. It must be included into every decision that is currently made.
We are going to be in great trouble when the next collapse happens if these plans to eliminate the Public Sector Schools. More to the point, if education is, as Reagan said, a privilege, then that means that we, as a nation, are not progressing, and almost always, by all economists standards, mean that we are no longer going to be the world leaders in manufacturing, and other things. We currently have a luxury of paying extremely low prices for oil consumption than any of the other countries in the world. This is based upon the fact that we, the US, sets that standard for Oil Prices based upon our Dollar. This is going to come to a grinding halt very soon, especially if other countries like China, Russia, France, and Iran have their say over it. As recently as last year, these nations gathered together in a secret meeting about the World Economics. For the first time in the recent History of these meetings, the US was purposely left out. It was later reported among these countries that if the world is to progress, they must get off of the Dollar standard (This was reported on RT, France 24, CCTV, and other popular International News Channels. including Sky News.)
All of that said, what does any of that have to do with the price of tea in China. Looking at this in a critical manner, it means that the Government is trying to make, at least on the surface, wages to decrease. This would be a good thing for Corporations, it would allow them the ability to have a higher profit margin. Remember the least amount of money they have to spend, the greater the profit margin. What I personally believe that they fail to see is the fact that the higher wages are, the more they can charge for the product to be viable to the consumer to buy. That means if you don't have the consumers, your product is useless. That also means another financial meltdown, this one would make the last one look like a day at the beach. So, be prepared for that.
There are many reasons that ending public sector schools is a bad idea. I previously mentioned but one thing. Here is another thing to consider. We have racists in this country. Yes, through all of the 1960's and early 70's protests, we still have racism in the United States of America. Ending the mandatory bussing would lead us back into the segregations of those prior times. Yes, that is one plan that some in the Conservative Movement have.
I wanted to open this up for a greater debate. The actual things that the Governor of the Great State of Wisconsin is doing is taking things back to a time when equality was lessened. This isn't anything new, it's been proposed time and again. The teachers unions are what have, in generalities, been the stop gap for this.
I am asking that we not allow ourselves to go backward. I am asking that we move ahead. Quit leaning forward, and move ahead with me.
Is there a way out of this financial mess that our Government has put us in? I am not, by any means, an Economist. Do not take me as one. I will say that we have the means to move forward, and yes it does take some sacrificing. If we want these Social Programs, like the Firefighters and the Police, then we need to fund them. We can do this in several ways. One way is to raise taxes on everyone, not just one set of people. Another way is to generate 1.8 Trillion dollars, by some economists projections, a year by eliminating the Marijuana Prohibition. How would this work, one might ask? We spend approximately 78 Billion, that's Billion with a B, on keeping it illegal and prohibited a year. You take that out of the equation, and actually allow it to be taxed on the Federal Level. This would, again according to many economists, generate the additional 1.1 Trillion in taxes. We use that money to pay off the debt from the bonds that the Government hasn't been pushing on its citizens, and pushing throughout the rest of the world to other countries like China and Saudi Arabia.
Also we could eliminate, in its entirety, the Department of Homeland Security. This is an unnecessary agency, as recently proven. They have consistently been all about keeping with the best interests of the Corporations in this nation than actually going after Al Quaeda and other security threats. This has been recently proven by the taking down of Search Engines and other similar internet content providers. The Department of Homeland Security is one of those agencies that have little to do with actually protecting the security of the nation than they are a Policing Agency used against the Citizens of this country to hamper progress. I am sure they think they are doing what is necessary, but in reality all they are doing is hampering progress. For example, many people want competition within the Cable and Satellite companies. Many people want IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) instead of the old style Cable Companies and Satellite companies, which are, for all intents and purposes, legalized monopolies. No one is advocating the eliminations of these companies, but rather are in favor of a broader service that would include a more competitive market. The Department of Homeland Security fails to recognize this, by the way that their actions play out.
I don't mean to rant, if that's the way it's being taken, but offering solutions to the problems. we have many things that could be done, but refuse to get off the past, and move ahead. We, as a nation, need to move ahead rather than be a part of the failed past. That isn't my opinion, but rather the way things are going to have to work.
Thanks for reading.
